  1. The needle and cannula are positioned so that they are in contact with the renal capsule. The needle is advanced through the cannula into the kidney ensuring that only cortical tissue is penetrated.
  2. The cutting blade is advanced over the needle shaft with a single swift, sharp movement to obtain a biopsy specimen.
  3. The surgeon immobilizing the kidney should direct the needle placement while an assistant performs procedure required to obtain biopsy specimen.
  4. Ultrasound guidance is not essential for this procedure but may be used to ensure accurate needle placement when attempting to biopsy focal lesions.
