  1. Iodine deficiency is a very rare cause of goitre in the cat.
  2. In most cases there will be signs of hypothroidism.
  3. Differentials for this presentation would include benign thyroid neoplasia (usually functional and causing hyperthyroidism), thyroid cyst, thyroid abscess, malignant thyroid neoplasia. Benign thyroid neoplasms are usually much smaller than goitre due to iodine deficiency.
