Overview

Sample collection technique

Step 1

  • Fast animal for 12 hours prior to testing.
  • Collect blood sample plain tube labeling sample with time and owner's name.
  • Ideally perform insulin assay in conjunction with glucose assay Insulin: glucose ratio.
  • Ideally collect second set of samples at a different time.

Precautions

  • Label sequential samples with care. Easy to mix up.

Sample storage

  • Separate serum from sample for insulin assay prior to storage.
  • Store samples in refrigerator prior to despatch.

Normal (reference) values

  • Normal fasted 6-22 IU/ml.

Abnormal values

  • Values > normal in face of hypoglycemia (inappropriate response) may   →   Insulinoma.
