Primary seborrhea
Introduction
- Rare, inherited disorder of keratinization or cornification.
- Signs: scaly skin, often greasy, often malodorous, comedo formation.
- Prognosis: incurable, depends on severity.
Presenting signs
- Dry, flaky skin and dull coat +/- greasy malodorous skin, comedones, crusts .
- Secondary bacterial or yeast infection +/- associated pruritus.
- Ceruminous otitis externa Otitis externa.
Age predisposition
- Severe form by 2-3 days of age.
- Mild form noticeable by 6 weeks of age.
Breed/Species predisposition
- Persian Persian longhair.
- Himalayan .
- Exotic shorthair Exotic shorthair.
Cost considerations
- Lifelong therapy needed.
Pathogenesis
Etiology
- Inherited condition in Persian cats (?autosomal recessive). Any sex and color can be affected.
Pathophysiology
- Genetically determined trait, causing uncharacterized cell defect → excessive epidermal cell turnover.
Timecourse
- Present at birth.
- Lifelong.
- Worsens over time.
