Medial patellar ligament: splitting

ISSN 2398-2977

Contributor(s) :

Introduction

  • Induces a localized desmitis within the ligament with subsequent ligament thickening; this disables the proximal part of the ligament from hooking easily over the medial femoral trochlear ridge.

Uses

Advantages

  • Can be carried out in standing position if desired.
  • Simple technique.
  • No known complications.
  • High success rate.
  • Rapid return to exercise.

Disadvantages

  • Rarely, a case may not respond initially, or in the longer term.
  • The technique can be repeated with some success.

Technical problems

  • In very small animals, it may be difficult to visualize and reach the surgical sites.
  • In these cases, and those where behavior issues are a problem, a short general anesthetic and dorsal recumbency may be required.
