Placenta: retained 03 - the saline filled placenta

  1. The stomach tube is held in place within the placenta using one or two ties of gauze bandage.
  2. 10 liters of saline are infused slowly and the tube is left in place in the standing mare in case fluid escapes or more fluid is required.
  3. If the placenta is not passed within about 30 mins the tube should be removed and the fluid allowed to drain.
  4. Alternative treatment should then be applied; eg tetanus profylaxis  Tetanus toxoid , antibiotics, NSAIDs and vasodilators to prevent laminitis  Foot: laminitis .
