Radiation physics: characteristic curve - film speed

  1. The gradient of the characteristic curve is related to the speed of the film .
  2. The steeper the gradient the ''faster'' the film - therefore the film with characteristic curve 1 is faster than the film with the characteristic curve 2.
  3. In order to produce a change in film density from a to b film 1 requires a change in exposure from A to B.
  4. To produce the same change in film density on film 2 the exposure must be increased from A to C.
  5. Film 1 requires half the exposure (B compared with C) to produce the same density (b) as film 2.
