Introduction

- The pelvis is a difficult area to radiograph, requiring powerful x-ray equipment and facilities to radiograph horses under general anesthesia Anesthesia: general - overview .
Uses
- The most common reason to radiograph the hip and pelvis is to determine if there is a fracture, in which case a general anesthetic is contraindicated for at least 6 weeks.
Advantages
- Non-invasive diagnostic technique.
Disadvantages
- Primarily detects bony changes.
Alternative techniques
- Scintigraphy Bone: scintigraphy , can be extremely sensitive to bony pathology.
- Ultrasound Ultrasonography: bone / joints , useful for fractures of the ilium.
- Thermography Thermography .
