Intravenous catheterization: catheter shear 02

  1. Catheter shear commonly occurs when the catheter stylette is re-introduced into the catheter during insertion.
  2. There is danger of the sheared part of the catheter becoming dislodged and becoming a foreign body emboli.
  3. If you suspect that the stylette has caused catheter shear, carefully remove the stylette before gently removing the catheter.
