Blood: gas analysis
Overview
- Arterial blood gas analysis is the most sensitive clinical measurement of pulmonary function.
Uses
Alone
- Mainly used in foal - assessment of pulmonary function, assessment of right to left shunting, diagnosis of hypoxemia and hypercapnia.
- May be used in adults in investigation of poor performance, respiratory distress, equine asthma Equine asthma.
In combination
- With tracheal aspirate cytology Trachea: transtracheal aspiration / washing Respiratory: lower airway cytology , chest radiography Thorax: radiography , auscultation Thorax: auscultation .

Availability
- Large referral practices, educational institutions, neonatal intensive care units, large surgical facilities.
Technique intrinsic limitations
In adults- Measurement of resting blood gases is of limited use as severe pathology must be present before PaO2 decreases.
- Measurement of PaO2 during exercise will however assist in pinpointing the lung as the source of inadequate performance.
