Eyelid: temporary tacking sutures for entropion

Introduction

  • Entropion in young dogs often corrects itself during growth.
  • Temporary eversion of affected eyelid(s) eliminates trichiasis during this period, therefore reducing irritation and the risk of corneal ulceration. It also relieves the spastic entropion component.
  • Lembert type sutures are easy to place and the procedure is quick.

Uses

  • Entropion Entropion Eyelid: entropion keratitis - young dog correction in puppies.
  • Relief of spastic entropion caused by a painful corneal ulcer in a dog of any age.

Advantages

  • Simple and quick to perform.
  • If performed early, eg 2-4 weeks old in Shar Pei Chinese Shar Pei , may save more extensive surgery later.
  • Facilitates healing of any corneal ulcers Ulcerative keratitis that are being complicated by trichiasis.

Disadvantages

  • The sutures may become dislodged early, through self-trauma or rapid growth.

  • A few minutes - depending on number of sutures required.

Criteria for choosing test

  • Young puppies (<5 months) with entropion that is causing trichiasis.
  • Spastic entropion in animals of all ages.
