Introduction

  • To allow first intention healing whilst minimizing epithelialization or granulation tissue formation Skin flap classification.
  • Can be used to close large wound defects or cover other anatomical structures, ie frontal sinus hole following dehorning.

Uses

Advantages

  • Achieves functional and cosmetic result.
  • More rapid healing.
  • Less scar tissue when compared to second intention healing.

Disadvantages

  • Infection may be more likely compared to secondary closure or second intention healing.
