Introduction

  • Provides additional information on the female reproductive tract, when compared with manual transrectal palpation.

Uses

Advantages

  • Allows visualization of uterus contents, ovaries and associated ovarian structures which increases diagnostic accuracy compared to manual transrectal palpation.
  • Quick procedure in hands of experienced operator.
  • Allows clients to visualize findings.
  • Findings may be stored on many machines so that comparison over time can be made.

Disadvantages

  • Requires additional equipment compared to manual transrectal palpation.
  • The technique is invasive and should be used appropriately.
  • The equipment can, potentially, transmit disease between animals, and more importantly between farms.
