Ruminant fluid therapy cheat sheet

Meredyth Jones

Paul Wood

Large Animal CE

Synonym(s): Intravenous Fluid Therapy, IVFT

  • This fluid therapy “cheat sheet” has been kindly provided by Meredyth Jones DVM MS DipACVIM, of Large Animal Consulting and Education.
  • It is designed to be used in emergency field situations, where the veterinary surgeon does not have the option to run gold standard blood tests, etc. The ranges have been simplified to round figures to make calculations easier.

Commercially available fluids and lab result based calculations should always be the first option, but this guide is here to help, for those times that lab equipment and commercial fluids are not available and a patient needs IV fluids fast.
