Ureterocoele
Introduction
- Embryological anomaly.
- Cause: cystic dilation of portion of ureter running intramurally within bladder wall.
- Signs: leads to narrow ureteric opening/urine pressure builds up/bulging of bladder mucosa.
- Associated with ectopic ureter Ureter: ectopic.
- Can cause dysuria.
- Diagnosis: radiography, ultrasonography.
- Treatment:surgical drainage.
- Prognosis:guarded if symptomatic.
Presenting signs
- May be asymptomatic incidental finding on radiography.
- Urinary incontinence.
- Recurrent urinary tract infections.
- May be straining to urinate if dilation occurs.
Age predisposition
- Young animals (congenital abnormality).
Special risks
- If untreated can result in hydronephrosis and renal failure.
