Etiology

  • See specific conditions.

Pathophysiology

  • Impaired digestion/impaired absorption Malabsorption → presence of intraluminal complex molecules → osmotic diarrhea.
  • Some bacterial toxins, and also metabolites of intraluminal bacterial digestion of nutrients, stimulate secretion of fluid from intestine → secretory diarrhea.
  • Intestinal mucosal inflammation → increased mucosal permeability → diarrhea.
  • Altered intestinal motility.

Timecourse

  • Persisting >2 weeks.
