Colitis: granulomatous
Synonym(s): Regional enteritis
Introduction
- Rare form of inflammatory bowel disease affecting small and large bowel.
- Sometimes also known as regional enteritis.
- Focal disease affecting a small area of the ileum, cecum or colon.
- Cause: unknown.
- Signs: combination of both small and large intestinal symptoms.
- Diagnosis: by demonstration of inflammatory cellular infiltrate in lamina propria of colonic biopsies taken at colonoscopy Colonoscopy.
- Treatment: includes surgical excision of affected area and antibiotics with anti-inflammatory drugs subsequently.
Presenting signs
- Vomiting.
- Diarrhea.
- Hematochezia.
- Weight loss.
- Occasionally constipation if luminal diameter is reduced.
Age predisposition
- Males under 4 years.
