Synonym(s): Regional enteritis

Introduction

  • Rare form of inflammatory bowel disease affecting small and large bowel.
  • Sometimes also known as regional enteritis.
  • Focal disease affecting a small area of the ileum, cecum or colon.
  • Cause: unknown.
  • Signs: combination of both small and large intestinal symptoms.
  • Diagnosis: by demonstration of inflammatory cellular infiltrate in lamina propria of colonic biopsies taken at colonoscopy Colonoscopy.
  • Treatment: includes surgical excision of affected area and antibiotics with anti-inflammatory drugs subsequently.

Presenting signs

  • Vomiting.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Hematochezia.
  • Weight loss.

 

  • Occasionally constipation if luminal diameter is reduced.

Age predisposition

  • Males under 4 years.
