Introduction

  • Pelvic area measurement is relatively easy to perform and is one of the least variable measurements in a pre-breeding examination (which can also include bodyweight, body condition score Body condition scoring and reproductive tract scoring):
    • It can be used to aid in selection of replacement heifers at puberty (around 12 months old) or before breeding (around 14-15 months old).
    • Heifers with small pelvises may be culled prior to breeding, or mated to bulls with good caving ease EBVs, followed by careful observation at calving.
  • Commonly employed methods include:
    • Internal pelvimetry using the Rice pelvimeter.
    • External measurements (between the two tuber coxae, the two tuber ischii and between the tuber coxae and the tuber ischii on one side).
