Estimated breeding values

ISSN 2398-2993

Synonym(s): EBVs

Introduction

  • Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) are a tool for selecting breeding animals for the herd.
  • They provide an estimation for how that individual’s progeny should perform. However, they only provide 50% of the genetics, so values must be halved. Environmental influences, eg disease, diet and management also contribute to an animal’s phenotype.
  • They compare an individual’s performance in a selected trait to the herd or breed benchmark for that specific trait, this is based on performance data from relatives, correlation between performance traits, heritability.
  • EBVs can be compared between herds but not between breeds.
