Eyelid: entropion surgery
Introduction
- Surgical repair of lower eyelid margin inversion.
- Two techniques are described below:
- Temporary tacking sutures.
- Excisional surgery.
Uses
Advantages
- Effective solution to entropion.
Disadvantages
- Cost of procedure and post-operative care.
Technical problems
- Immobilizing the patient for surgery requires good handling facilities, sedation Sedating cattle or general anesthesia Anesthetizing cattle.
Alternative techniques
- Penicillin injection into lower eyelid has historically been advocated but this is no longer recommended due to concerns regarding responsible antimicrobial stewardship.

Preparation
- 20 min.
Procedure
- Temporary tacking: 10 min.
- Surgical excision: 20 min.
Decision taking
Criteria for choosing test
- Ensure the eye and surrounding skin is free from infection and inflammation is minimal:
- If cellulitis is present, then pre-treatment with appropriate antimicrobials and anti-inflammatories is advisable until swelling and inflammation has resolved Anti-inflammatory drugs: overview.
Risk assessment
- Are the handling facilities or operating facilities adequate and safe for patient and attending personnel?
