Taxonomy

  • Order: Enterobacteriales.
  • Family: Enterobacteriaceae.
  • Genus: Klebsiella.
  • Species: pneumoniae, oxytoca and variicola.

Etymology

  • Klebsiella: named after T.A.E. Klebs (1834-1913) - German bacteriologist. 
  • Pneumoniae: Gk: pneuma - wind, breath.
  • Oxytoca: Gk: Oxus – sour; tokos – producing.

Distribution

  • Worldwide.
  • Ubiquitous to environment (soil, water and vegetation) and gastrointestinal tracts of mammals.

Significance

  • Opportunistic pathogen; infects immunocompromised sites.
  • Associated with nosocomial infections in human beings, particularly those on ventilators.
  • Associated with mastitis Mastitis: Klebsiella spp and pneumonia in cattle.
