Dermal melanoma
Synonym(s): Neoplasia, melanocyte, melanoblast
Introduction
- Cause: unknown.
- Signs: uncommon cause of neoplasia in cattle. Less than 2% of bovine tumors.
- Diagnosis: histopathology or cytology.
- Treatment: surgical resection.
- Prognosis: most are benign so good prognosis after resection.
Geographic incidence
- Worldwide.
Age predisposition
- Any age of animal can be affected, but young cattle appear to be more commonly affected.
Breed/Species predisposition
- Dark-haired animals are predisposed.
- Angus cattle Aberdeen angus.
Cost considerations
- Cost of surgical resection.
Pathogenesis
Etiology
- Benign or malignant neoplasms arising from melanocytes or melanoblasts.
Pathophysiology
- Benign melanomas may become secondarily infected or hemorrhagic.
- Malignant melanomas frequently metastasize to local and distant sites eg visceral and cranial spread.
Timecourse
- Benign usually grow slowly.
- Malignant grow quickly and secondary spread develops early, this is rare in cattle.
