Introduction

  • Teat injuries are not uncommon in dairy herds and medical management is often unsuccessful. A surgical approach may be needed to treat this condition and local anesthesia of the teat may be necessary to suture a laceration.

Uses

Advantages

  • Provision of appropriate anesthesia for teat surgery.
  • No interference with the surgical site or wound.

Disadvantages

  • None.

Technical problems

  • Sedation may be required Sedating cattle in fractious or very painful animals – beware of current gestation period when administering sedative drugs.
