Taxonomy
- Kingdom: bacteria.
- Phylum: proteobacteria.
- Class: gammaproteobacteria.
- Order: enterobacteriales.
- Family: enterobacteriaceae.
- Genus: yersinia.
- Species: yersinia pseudotuberculosis.
Etymology
- Yersin - Swiss-born French bacteriologist.
- Gk: pseudes - false; L: tuberculum - tuber; hump/swelling.
Distribution
- Worldwide distribution. Common in the Northern hemisphere.
- Found in intestinal tracts of cattle.
- Serotypes I, II and II are known to be enteropathogens of cattle. Serotype III has the highest reported prevalence.
- Prolonged survival of Y. pseudotuberculosis in cold wet weather will facilitate fecal-oral transmission.
Significance
- Causes tuberculosis-like symptoms.
- Localized tissue necrosis and gramulomas in the spleen, liver and lymph nodes.
- Causes profuse liquid diarrhea, intestinal abscess's, abortion and systemic illness including death.
- Some evidence that it can cause mastitis and abortion.
- Zoonosis: may be fatal; mainly children and young adults.
