Distribution
- Worldwide distribution.
Significance
- This is the most pathogenic species of coccidia in cattle causing hemorrhagic diarrhea in calves.
- Infection causes a generalized catarrhal enteritis involving both the large and small intestines.
- E. zuernii is the most common cause of ‘winter coccidiosis’ which occurs primarily in calves during or following cold or stormy weather in the winter months.
